He was Only a Cookie

A successful weight loss client donated this story as food for thought. She has dropped 70 lbs. over the past year and still has 45 lbs. to go.

He was only a cookie (or a piece of cake, or dessert, or candy) but I loved him.

I met him at a party. There he was at the end of the buffet – a loner, the last one left. He had a certain something – a sweetness, a sensuality. He was a hot cookie.

I felt as if I'd always known him, always hungered for him. When he looked at me, I melted. Before I knew it, I had my hands around him, my mouth on him – in public! After that night, we were inseparable.

With him, I could be myself. He didn't seem to care what mood I was in, how I looked, even if I gained weight. Together we had the recipe for happiness. No one satisfied me more.

Then things changed. My friends said he was no good for me. He started to give me heartburn. I felt crummy and it had to end.

Now we have gone our separate ways. I hardly think of him anymore. Oh, if I see a certain TV commercial, a particular magazine ad, a coupon for 10¢ off – that longing returns. And when we run into each other in the supermarket, we nod. We're friendly. BUT IT IS OVER.

This is a wonderful story for all the foods that tempt us and undermine our health e.g. donuts, Twinkies, cakes, refined flours and sugars, pies, candies, refined cookies and breads.

Quick Vegetable Dish for Dinner

8 Shitake Mushrooms (sliced)
1 Large organic Onion (diced)
5 Cloves of fresh Garlic (chopped)
1 Small organic Cabbage
1 Red/Orange Bell Pepper (diced)
1 Cup chopped Okra
½ Cup chopped Tomatoes
½ Cup frozen Lima Beans
Spices:        Seal salt, pepper, cumin, coriander, ginger and parsley

Steam cabbage for 15-20 minutes until soft. (It should be crunchy and not over-cooked).

While the cabbage is steaming, sauté diced onion, chopped garlic and sliced mushrooms. To the sautéed vegetables, add approximately ¼ cup of water from the steamed cabbage and then add the lima beans. Add red bell pepper, okra, tomatoes and start adding spices to taste. Simmer for approximately 10 minutes

Slice the steamed cabbage and add to sautéed vegetables. Add more water from steamed cabbage, if needed. Simmer for another 10 minutes. Mix and stir regularly. This should be the consistency of a casserole. Add more spices, if necessary. You can also add some chutney. (Major's Chutney is available at Whole Foods and Krogers).

Benefits: immune enhancing, hormone balancing, anti-cancer
