What is "Organic"?
Organic refers to the way agricultural products are grown and processed, without the use of chemical pesticides or herbicides. No genetically engineered plants and products. “Certified organic” means without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, artificial ripening processes, growth stimulants such as hormones, antibiotics and other drugs. Today farms have become large agricultural corporations which depend on large amounts of petrochemicals, drugs, artificial fertilizers, toxic pesticides, herbicides which can contaminate water supplies. Our food has become over processed, artificially colored, fumigated, irradiated and is also shipped long distances. This impacts the quality of the food we eat. The quality of our food today is poor compared to our great, great grandmother’s time at the turn of this century.
In the USA about 2 billion pounds of pesticides and herbicides are applied to our land and food crops every year. In 1987 the EPA ranked pesticides in our food as one of the nation’s most serious health and environmental hazards. The EPA reported that many of these pesticides are considered among the most deadly of chemicals.
The National Academy of Science reported that 30% of insecticides, 50% of herbicides and 90% of fungicides are known to cause cancer in animal studies. They contaminate the air, the water and the soil affecting every living being on the planet.
Almost all of us carry chemical residues of pesticides in the fatty tissue of our body. DDT has been found in the breast milk of nursing mothers.
Suburban gardens and lawns receive very heavy applications of pesticides and herbicides. In 1987 the National Cancer Institute found that children who lived in households where outdoor pesticides were regularly used were six to nine times more likely to develop some form of childhood leukemia and this figure increased by four times, when indoor pesticides were used.
Petrochemicals, pesticides, herbicides, plastics have an ability to bind at the estrogen and testosterone binding sites in your body. They are called Xenoestrogens.
Xenostrogens are chemical substances in our environment that mimic human hormones and interfere with their functions. Both men and women are affected and this can lead to infertility, decreased libido, hormonal imbalances and cancers.
If everyone started to clean up their little corner in their “world” we could all be much healthier and more vibrant. You, as the consumer, can help drive and encourage changes. If everybody demands organic foods, it will encourage the chemical farmers to change to ORGANIC FARMING. We the consumer have enormous power to change the world, the environment and to increase our awareness that we all impact the planet which supports our health and wellbeing. Good health can start in your back yard, in your home,
YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
