YES, YES, YES, it does!!
Have you ever known some one you had a stressful event in their life and went grey over night?
What happened to that person hormonally?
The Adrenal Glands are your glands of stress and produce hormones that help you deal with stress. In times gone by it was the function of the Adrenal Glands to ensure the survival of the human race; so, when you were confronted with a wild animal that was going to eat you a live, your adrenals kicked in. Hormonally you went into the fight _ flight reflex.
The Fight_Flight Reflex causes; *your heart rate to accelerate, * your blood pressure to rise, *your blood sugar to increase, * your cholesterol to be elevated and you start to breath rapidly.
All this was done by your body in a split second to enable you to run for your life. Once you were safe and sound all the above levels went back down to normal and you were fine.
Now fast forward into today’s world you still have the fight_flight reflex when under
stress but you seldom "run away" so your blood pressure stays elevated, your blood sugar stays high, your cholesterol stays elevated and so does your heart rate. Your adrenal glands continue to pump out cortizol, your stress hormone, in response but you do not "flee" so it does not switch off.
That is why working out on a daily basis helps stress. Getting physically active turns the stress response off. If you do not turn it off eventually the adrenal glands become exhausted from over stimulation.
Some symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue include:
- You tend to wake up tired and feel unrested in the morning.
- You may crave salty foods.
- You generally feel tired and it takes a lot of effort to get through your day.
- You feel more stressed out than you should be. You cannot think straight.
- Around the menopausal years it is one of biggest causes of frequent hot flashes.
- You tend to take a long time to recover of an illness or injury.
- You may feel some what depressed. You are just not as happy as you used to be.
- If you get up suddenly you experience dizziness and light headedness.
- Your hands and feet are always cold.
Learning to manage stress, eating a diet that nourishes the Adrenal Glands and balances out your hormones will resolve many of these problems. There are also many herbs and herbal teas that are nurturing to Adrenal health.
A daily Yoga practice does wonders for your stress and sleep quality.
Take time to be healthy, you are worth the effort!
